The 'announcement' was set for yesterday (the 12th), but that doesn't mean it will be available, just that we will see more of what's in it.

I also just preordered it (Academic version of Photoshop CS5 Extended). They just sent me the 'processing' e-mail, and haven't given me an 'estimated date' yet. But according to their website, it will start shipping 'Mid-April'

The only difference that I am aware of is when you register the academic version, the terms-of-use are different than the full version.
By different, I mean that you agree to not use Photoshop to makeedit photos (or anything, for that matter) that will be used to make you a profit either directly, or indirectly. (Which, of course, nobody really abides by this)

No. The Academic edition lets you do whatever the regular one does. The ONLY difference is when you buy it you must be a student and the student is the one using it (aka not buying it for your friend).
Edit: From Adobe's site..

Does the Adobe Student and Teacher Edition have restricted functionality?
Adobe Student and Teacher Editions give the end user all the features and functionality of the commercial versions. The software may be used only on a privately owned computer, and the end user may not transfer or resell ownership of the Adobe Student and Teacher Edition license.
Can a student or teacher use the Adobe Student and Teacher Edition software for commercial use?
Yes. Those who purchase this product can use it for personal as well as commercial use.
May Adobe Student and Teacher Edition software be resold or transferred?
No. Adobe Student and Teacher Edition software may not be sold by the end user or given to others for free.

Interesting.. Thanks for the correction!
Yeah, my post and understanding of the difference just came from what I heard. I never really looked into it.
